Chapter one
Where Her Story Began
Before she became the woman so many people knew and loved, she was a daughter, a sister, and a young girl learning the values that would shape the rest of her life.
She grew up surrounded by family, community, responsibility, laughter, and the kind of lessons that stay with you long after childhood. Those early years taught her how to care for people, how to stand firm in what she believed, and how to make room for others.
The woman she became did not appear overnight. Her warmth, her strength, her sense of family, and her willingness to give all had roots. They were shaped by where she came from and by the people who poured into her along the way.
And as her life unfolded, she carried those beginnings with her, becoming the kind of woman who would one day leave the same imprint on others.
Before she became a village for others, she was shaped by one.

An Account from a Loving Husband
Mrs. Joy Onyechi Egbo was born into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Unogwu Uwere of Ai-Agbo Clan, Ado Local Government Area, Igumale, Benue State, on 10th August, 1961. Her father was a renowned warrior and highly respected individual, while her mother, popularly known as Ododo Okibe from the Ai-Onazi Clan, was a highly respected and virtuous woman.
She had her primary school education at Methodist Primary School, Igumale. She was living with her late elder sister, Madam Ori, who played a motherly role to her.
I got to know late Miss Joy Onyechi Unogwu (Mrs. Joy Onyechi Egbo) properly when she was at Queen Amina Secondary School, Kaduna, from 1974 to 1979. When she gained admission into Queen Amina College, she moved in with her elder brother, Brig. Gen. K.A. Unogwu, at Dalet Barracks, who was then a Lieutenant/Captain. I was very close to General Unogwu during that period and visited him from time to time. It was during one of those visits that I saw Miss Joy Onyechi Unogwu and fell in love with her. However, I never let the General know that I was in love with her.
When I graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1976, I was sent to Southampton, England, for basic and advanced flying training. Coincidentally, General Unogwu was sent to Kiev, Russia, for an Engineering course. It was during this period that I called General Unogwu to tell him of my intention to marry his sister. Initially, he was opposed to my proposition because he said he did not want anything that would affect our relationship. I assured him that I came in peace and with good intentions, which he later understood and finally approved.
Consequently, we officially started dating throughout her secondary school period. I came back to Nigeria in 1979, immediately after her graduation from secondary school, and got married to her.
She later had her tertiary education at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where she earned her OND and HND in Animal Production. Mrs. Joy Onyechi Egbo ventured into business and poultry farming.
There was absolutely no dull moment with her. She was very strict with the children, especially when it came to discipline and moral values. That was how she earned the name GENERAL MUMMY.
On 24th May, 2016, my beloved wife suffered a stroke. We did everything within our power, both orthodox and traditional, to help her recover. General Unogwu's unwavering support formed part of a solid support system that helped the family surmount the stroke battle. In fact, we won the stroke war, except that she lost her speech capability.
She eventually had to undergo a major surgery to replace her hip bone at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, on 15th September. Fortunately, Heaven gained her.
We were blessed with five children and she loved them so dearly. She maintained very good relationships with her relatives, including Gen. Unogwu, Dr. Ifere, Charles Obande, Unogwu Unogwu, Otsapa Unogwu, Enotsonu Ifere, Enattah Ifere, Ogbilikwe Ifere, and many others. She was one of the most respected women in the Nigerian Air Force Officers Wives Association (NAFOWA).
We are most comforted that she was a daughter of Zion and is now resting in the bosom of the Lord. May her soul continue to have a deserved rest with the Lord Almighty.
